Oakley gave us a scare the first week of October 2015 when her blood shot to 600+ and no matter what we did for 3 days it stayed there. She did shot after shot and pumped herself full of insulin through her pump. We changed her pump, we changed her insulin, we did EVERYTHING we knew to do. Finally after the football game on day 3 of this she came home late, her blood still high, climbed into her bed, curled into a ball and bawled telling me, "Mom, my body hurts SO BAD!" That was it! Off to the Emergency Room for the first time ever with diabetes we went.
When we got there she informed us that she had done 48 UNITS of insulin through her pump during the football game. Not knowing this I gave her another 15 UNITS through a shot when she got home. So she had 63 UNITS of insulin in her body. That alone could have been fatal if it had taken effect the way it should have. Lucky for us it didn't. They didn't dare give her anymore, so they just immediately started her on an IV.
The IV ran its course as her blood slowly came down and about 2:30 am we headed home. We didn't have anymore issues with her blood that week. We decided that it was probably being dehydrated that caused it and just getting fluid in her was all she needed.
Just before we left the house to take her to the ER Ryan gave her a blessing. I am so grateful for the priesthood in my home. Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. We know that for sure! After sleeping it off she was ready to play at her volleyball game that night. You could tell she was dragging and didn't play her best, but we are not about to let this disease that we hate slow her down. If she wants to play (as much as that terrifies me) we let her play. I sure love this girl. She is tougher than anyone I know! So grateful this was just a little scare and things turned out just fine.
We managed to get a smile out of her before we left the hospital when her dad tried to put her blood pressure cuff back on and failed miserably, which of course set off alarms that Ryan helped himself to taking care of. She was dying. She kept saying, "Dad, you can't just push buttons!" She was feeling so much better by the time we left that she was mad and Ryan and I that we wouldn't get her some breakfast in town at 2:30 AM! Funny girl! We were just happy to have our girl back to her normal self!
