Car Accident

Yesterday, August 4th, we were headed home from Salt Lake super early (6 am) to get Oakley and Brooklyn back to teach dance after their night of performing for Elder Ballard.  We had just passed Far West, which is where we intended to stop for gas but passed it before we realized it and seeing that Brigham City was just ahead decided we would stop there.  Minutes later we noticed traffic ahead of us slowing and speeding up, then slowing then speeding up.  I slowed from 75 to about 60 when all of the sudden the little pick-up truck infront of me was at a complete stop.  I slammed on my brakes, but even being several hundred feet behind him knew at that speed we would hit him. Trying to think quickly I tried to miss it by going into the right hand lane (cement barriers were to my left) and seeing a semi in that lane realized my only option was to hit him.  Erica screamed and we both braced for impact.  Her screaming was a blessing and woke Oakley and Brooklyn who were sleeping in the back in enough time for them to brace for impact as well.  In a split second our day and plans were changed.  Our airbags deployed and it was almost like we had missed something and time had stood still.  Erica said is everyone okay at the same time I said it.  Once we saw we were all okay Erica said, "My arm hurts." I realized then that mine did too.  Looking down at my left arm it had burns all the way to my elbow from the airbag.  Looking over at Erica I quickly realized that mine didn't hurt anything like hers.  Her wrist was HUGE instantly.  Her watch had blown open and was embedded in her swelling wrist.  She asked me to help her get it off and then she said she was going to throw up.  The girls and I hurried to get her a bag and just after handing it to her she told us she was going to pass out.  Which she did!! I held her head up with my right hand and tried to pat her cheek/shoulder with my left.  She was looking at me, but there was nothing behind her eyes.  I kept saying, "come on Erica!" Brooklyn started freaking out in the back seat saying, "come on mom!!" I kept telling Brook she is okay in my super calm voice while screaming at Erica inside my head saying COME ON ERICA, DON'T DO THIS TO ME!!! What seemed like an eternity, but seconds later she was back and the color returned to her face.  I jumped out and asked the 4 guys standing there if help was on the way.  They all looked at me like I was weird and said, "No, we thought you called for help!" NOPE! I sure did then though! We were blessed that an ambulance was just minutes behind us returning from transporting a patient earlier that morning and was there quickly to evaluate and take Erica for wrist x-rays.  As Erica climbed in the ambulance I realized she didn't even have her cell phone.  I ran it to her and told her she had to have it because I had no idea where they were even taking her! Not that I had a car to get to her....but I needed to know where she was even just for my peace of mind.  She decided then to take Oakley and Brooklyn with her.  I was so grateful she did.  The hospital got them breakfast and took good care of them.
Oakley and Brooklyn's Ambulance Selfie.  Of course they didn't take any pictures of Erica, the one actually hurt! Hahaha!

I was then left with the police officer to try and get my suburban off the road.  It wasn't drive able at all.  The bumper was pressed into my tire, the airbags deployed and my oil all over the road.  The officer told me we had to get all three vehicles off the road before we caused another accident.  He told me he was going to have me put it in neutral and push me the few miles up to the off ramp.  Of course I asked if there was someone else who could drive it for me.  He reassured me that I had this and could totally do it.  We started out slowly and soon I heard him on his loud speaker tell me to change lanes.  I started to fell the adrenaline come crashing down and realized that maybe I wasn't ok.  At this point though I HAD TO BE OKAY! Nobody else was going to do it for me! We got to the off ramp successfully then he decided they wanted to try and get me into the Flying J parking lot.  I could turn right, but because of the bumper I couldn't turn left.  So they hooked onto my bumper with a chain and service truck to pull the bumper off just enough I would be able to turn into the parking lot.  He told me that just before the stop sign he was going to give me a bump so I could turn right, then just before the parking lot he would bump me again to turn left.  The first bump at the stop sign was successful, but the second only got me right out into oncoming traffic with a semi coming straight at me.  After just having been in an accident I may have freaked out just a little and thought about evacuating. :) I had such limited steering ability that I couldn't turn my steering wheel enough to the left to make the turn.  The officer jumped out and came and cranked and cranked and cranked on my wheel (the semi stopped thank goodness!) and then he was able to give me one more final bump to get into the parking lot.  They had my suburban loaded on the wrecker in minutes and a nurse came to take my vitals.  I held back the tears and was tough because once again I HAD TO BE! It was just me to deal with it.  Ryan was cutting grain hours away and not able to help at all.  I climbed into the wrecker and started making phone calls to my insurance agent and a rental car company while staying in contact with the girls at the hospital.  It seriously took the officer incharge AN HOUR to write it all up and we kept wondering what was taking SO LONG! When the officer finally came to explain everything he said what had taken so long was that he had it all written up as a 3 car pile up with it being my fault, then the first car told him it was wrong and that they were hit TWICE! Once hard, then the second time just a bump.  He went back and re-read all the statements and looked at the damage on the vehicles and realized that the truck infront of me actually rearended the first car before I ever hit him.  That is why all of a sudden they were at a dead stop infront of me. The middle car kept trying to tell the officer that it was my fault.  Grrrr. He said the statements and damage proved otherwise.  I was relieved to know that I was at fault, but he was too and it made it make a little more sense in my mind as to how the accident happened.  Once I got the info from the officer me and my tow truck driver, who I had become pretty good friends with by this time, were headed to the hospital.
Erica had been checked out and discharged and I found these cute girls crashed out in the ER waiting room. As we waited for our car rental company to come I called my dad and for the first time the emotions hit me.  I could barely talk through the tears.  Because when you are on the phone with your dad it doesn't matter how old you are you no longer have to be tough. For the first time all day I realized just how brave I had been and was reminded that I could do hard things and just had! It was a quick breakdown before I put my brave face back on and dried the tears in time for the car rental place to pick us up.  They took us the 1/2 hour back to Ogden to get a rental car and even showed us the back roads so we didn't have to go back through our crash site.  So thankful for that.  Driving home in a strange car through traffic after a bad accident was hard enough on my sore shaking body I was so grateful for an easier route around to get us on our way.  We were suppose to be home by 10 am for the girls to teach dance and didn't make it home till 4 pm.  We were just SO GRATEFUL to be home safely and counting our many blessings.  We were able to find a little humor in the crazy events of the day as we traveled back together.  We laughed and cried and prayed and will never forget that day! Erica and I both talked about how both our airbags were deployed, we both have marks and hurt arms from them, but neither of us remember hitting them.  I know we were watched over with help from the other side of the veil.  We are achy and sore today, but NOTHING like we should be with how fast we hit the truck infront of us! For now my suburban sits in Utah waiting for them to tell us what our options are.  Sad day.  I do love that suburban.   But I look at Erica and our beautiful girls and know that the suburban is what it is....it can be replaced. We are just grateful to be safe and home!

Elder Ballard

Oakley's tour group got the incredible opportunity to travel to Salt Lake and dance as entertainment at a new stake merge.  Elder Ballard was in the stake and we got the chance to hear him speak and then they danced for him and about 1000 other people.  Oakley has had so many incredible opportunities through this tour team and we haven't even gone on tour yet! Soooo cool!!

After they danced they taught the Virginia Reel.  Oakley grabbed a little girl to be her partner.  Hard to see in the picture, but so stinking cute!
Once everything was over we were helping clean up and a mom and her little daughter came over and asked Oakley and Brooklyn if we all had traveled down from Idaho and then told them that her little girl (about 6 years old I'd guess) was sad because she didn't get to learn the Virginia Reel.  Oakley and Brook hurried and grabbed a few boys and a few other girls and one of the boys ran and grabbed the fiddler and they taught this little 6 year old the Virginia Reel just out on the grass in the dark.  It seriously made this little girls day!! Little things like that make all the difference in the world.  Proud of Oakley and Brooklyn for serving. They are growing and changing so much from these experiences!

Happy Birthday Oakley

I can't believe this little baby is SIXTEEN!! She has had a count down going all summer long.  Her friends have been able to date for months and she was patiently waiting.  And now it is finally here! She had a big day yesterday.  It started at midnight when her best friend Lauren woke her up (I'm not sure she was actually asleep though) to tell her happy birthday and eat cake and ice cream.  She then had to get up early to teach dance camp.  Her and her friends planned a day date to go to lunch and Squealers (mini amusement park) and then she had an evening dance performance followed by a party at our house.

Usually our kids only get 3 presents for their birthdays, a tradition passed down from my family.  But Ryan's family had a tradition that on their 16th birthday they got 16 presents.  So we went with that. So fun!
I was sneaky and got a picture of her leaving on her first date! Eeeek! It looks like he was leaving her behind, but actually he was hurrying to open the door for her! He also brought her roses after her dance performance.  What a great kid!
This is her and Brooklyn just before the dance performance.  It was a HOT day to dance out in the sun. They did great though and loved it like always!

And then PARTY at our house afterwards.  We seriously had pushing 50 kids here.  She invited her school friends, her Rigby dance friends and her tour team dance friends.  We had a HOUSE FULL and love, love, loved it!! The night ended with a cake to the face thanks to her besties Lauren and Nayia. I got to do clean-up till about 1 am, but worth it for her to have a great day! We love this girl.  I will never forget the moment the doctors put her in my arms.  She changed my world! Happy Birthday sis!

Girls Camp 2016

This is the only picture I got of Oakley the day I was at girls camp for bishops night.  She had a great week and we were blessed that she was able to go for the entire week.  We were worried with her crazy dance schedule that she wouldn't be able to.  This is her 5th year so she was able to hike Table Rock Mountain. It is a HARD hike and I am so grateful she got the opportunity! I want my kids to know that they can do hard things and this was a great example of that! I am so thankful for amazing Young Women leaders that take time out of their crazy lives to spend the week helping my daughter learn and grown and feel the spirit.
These are a few pictures Oakley took on top of the mountain. BEAUTIFUL! So proud of her for setting the goal and sticking with it. So worth it in the end!

Rope Swing

Ryan is a great dad and every once in awhile surprises us....
Like the other day when he put up a rope swing into the canal.  The kids were on it immediately and loved it. (Till the wind ruined the fun anyway)

Oakley was at girls camp so she hasn't tried out the swing yet.  We will definitely get pictures when she does.

Sisters

With grandma's funeral came family.  I LOVE family get together's.  My parents, 4 of my siblings families, my cousin Nanette and my nephew Jake's family were all able to stay in our new home.  I LOVE this house! We made it so the people would come....and they do...and we fill it...and there is NOTHING BETTER! My sisters and sis-in-law Diane had planned a day where we were going to spend time at a rental house my dad inherited from his parents that the renters moved out of and left filthy.  Filthy really isn't even the word to describe this house.  There are no words! We had planned to clean and then go to the Playmill in West Yellowstone to watch Singing in the Rain that evening.  Grandma's funeral was on Saturday and our tickets were for Monday, so my sisters stayed the weekend with me.  SOOOOO NICE!! What a great few days together.  I was so grateful for their help at the nasty house too.  It has been a HUGE project and I have spent alot of hours there.  The hours go by so much faster with help and good company. :)

And Singing in the Rain was a BLAST too! The Playmill never disappoints!

Pioneer Day Celebration

We went to the annual stake 24th of July celebration again this year.  They had the live fish pond where the kids got to catch a poor fish. :) Rhett and Dallin both came home with one.  We had my brother Shane's 4 youngest kids and Sam came home with a few fish as well.

I got to help with the games again.  It's even better when I get to help my family.  This is me and Memory doing the bubbles.  Such a fun night!

This Girl

Oakley cracks me up! To this girl all the world is a dancing stage! Here she is in her pj's headed out to move pipe with her music blasting and dancing away.  Love her!

Grandma Murdock

I have been very blessed to live here close to my Grandma Joy Murdock.  My kids have been able to get to know her and love her as well.  She is a spunky little thing and always cracking jokes.  She has such a bubbly personality and is so fun to be around.  She loves her family and is always asking about all of them.  On July 18th I got a phone call from my cousin Mindy saying that grandma was not feeling well and needed help.  So I ran in to see what was going on.  When I got there the staff at her assisted living facility thought she was dealing with indigestion.  I agreed after being there for not very long that that is what it looked like.  She was SO UNCOMFORTABLE though and after my cousin Elena and her husband arrived and gave her a priesthood blessing, Elena and I were able to talk her into going to the hospital to get checked out.  The ambulance came and got her and loaded her up and I followed.
I was able to sneak in with her once she got there.  Elena and her husband weren't as lucky and ended up in the waiting room.  Because her oxygen was low and her chest was bothering her they immediately did an EKG of her heart.  They had to roll her on her back to do the EKG and because of previous back surgery she REALLY doesn't do well on her back.  It was so hard to watch her be in pain as they did the testing.  The test seriously only takes a minute, but they couldn't get her to hold still.  The doctor saw the fuzzy results of the first test and declared a heart attack and told them to test again.  The second test wasn't much better, but he once again declared heart attack and ordered a third test.  By this time they decided to sit her up so he wasn't laying on her back to do the test and were able to get a good clear reading on the third test....which he declared again HEART ATTACK.  They were able to get morphine in her quickly and it didn't take long for her to become comfortable and back to her normal self.

This is her smiling picture so I could send it to her kids so they would know she was okay.  She is such a strong, beautiful lady.  When we first got there she motioned for me so I came to her bed and she whispered, "Natalie, I'm Naked!" I said, "grandma, no you're not.  You have a mu-mu on." "No, Natalie.....I'm Naaaakkkkeeeeddd!" I reassured her again she had clothes on.  Then she whisphered, "Under this I'm Naked!" I said, "Well grandma, Under my clothes I'm naked too.  In fact, everyone in this room is naked if that's what we are gaging it off of." :) Hahaha. Oh, I love her and her funny little personality!
A few other funny things she said at the hospital that I want to remember was just after the guy had come into take a chest x-ray he came back in looking for a marker he had misplaced.  He was looking all around her and lifting up her blankets here and there as he was searching and after he couldn't find it and walked out of the room she said, "I'd be fine if these fella's would stop looking at my fanny!" I died laughing.  I said, "grandma, he is just looking for his marker." She responded with, "Well it's not in my bum!" bahahahaha!
She also kept saying, "I had a heart attack, I can't believe I had a heart attack! How could this happen?!?!" I finally said, "Well, grandma, you aren't 25 anymore!" She snickered and covered her cute little mouth with her hand as she did and then said, "I know.........I'm 26!" hahahaha. Oh I love this lady!
That night after we got her checked into a room and comfortable I sat on her bed and held her hand and she said, "oh, what would I do without my Natalie?"
Two days later my sweet grandma passed away.  She was doing well and they were planning to send her home and then suddenly she was gone.  It was time to go home to grandpa.  I am going to miss this sweet lady.  She means the world to me and I am a better person because of her example and love.

My mom and dad are currently serving a mission and so they were not able to be here when grandma passed away.  They were able to run home for 3 days to help plan the funeral and clean out her apartment.  It was good to see them even under such sad circumstances.

My little Laiklie became best friends with grandma the year that grandma had to have back surgery.  Laiklie wasn't in school yet and so we went with grandma to all of her doctors appointments.  Laiklie and grandma became pretty tight.  I knew that this would be so hard for Laiklie and after the viewing she asked me several times if she would get to see grandma again the next day before the funeral so she could say good-bye.  I caught this tender moment of her telling her great-grandma and sweet friend good-bye.  She cried and cried.  Such a heartbreaking thing to lose those we love.  We are SO BLESSED to know that families can be together forever.  We like to think that grandma can now come to Laiklie's dance/piano recitals. :)

One more final good-bye from Laiklie

I am so thankful to be a descendant of Joy Murdock and I'm more thankful to have known and loved her.
